"SUSSEX BY THE SEA"

The "unofficial" Regimental March of the Royal Sussex Regiment.

A "Quick-March" written by Ward-Higgs.

The official Regimental March was "The Royal Sussex", but that was rarely played.

"THE ROYAL SUSSEX"

The official Regimental March of the 1st Bn. Royal Sussex Regiment.

Possibly adopted, borrowed or stolen, from the defeated

French Regiment "The Royal Roussillon", but this march (originally a "Canter" for mounted troops) - It was unloved & very rarely played.

"Sussex by the Sea", although unofficial, soon took over.

"THE LASS OF RICHMOND HILL"

"The Lass" was probably Francis L`  Anson, the wife of Leonard McNally (above),

a Northern Irish barrister & activist. - McNally wrote the text as a tribute to her.

The music was already penned by James Hook.

The tune was also re-arranged, later, both as a folk-song and as a March.

(It is unclear, how the tune "Emigrated" to India & to the 107th. !)
